The duties and responsibilities of the Inspections Department, and of the inspectors in it, are to enforce within the county’s territorial jurisdiction state and local laws, and local ordinances and regulations relating to:

The construction of buildings;

  • The installation of such facilities as plumbing systems, electrical systems, heating systems, refrigeration systems, and air-conditioning systems;

  • The maintenance of buildings in a safe, sanitary, and healthful condition;

  • Other matters that may be specified by the board of commissioners.

There is a new rule for unlicensed contractors in North Carolina, which means you now even have to be even more careful when hiring someone to do any work. The law used to be for any job under $30,000, you didn't need a contractor's license. However, that has all changed due to a new law that took effect on October 1, 2023. Under the new law, the threshold is now any work less than $40,000 you don't need to be licensed. Exceptions to this requirement can be reviewed at this link: N.C. Licensing Requirements for General Contractors
